Korean baseball slugger Choi Hee-seop is on fire! In the final Interleague Series match against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], L.A. Dodgers' batter Choi homered three times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], edging the Twins 4-3. Choi became the first player to hit three homers in a single game at Dodger Stadium since August,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2002 when the Philadelphia Phillies's Mike Lieberthal did so.
He also became the fourth player this season to hit three home runs in a single game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], joining Morgan Ensberg of the Houston Astros,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees and Dmitri Young of the Detroit Tigers.
And yet another record,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 26-year-old first-baseman became the first-ever Asian player in the Major League Baseball to achieve such a home run barrage.
With the latest three blasts over the fence and into the crowd in the first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fourth and sixth innings Sunday and two homers Friday and a solo Saturday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Choi has hit a total of six homers in three games. And that makes a total of 12 home runs for Choi this season.
After the winning moments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Choi said it was "unbelievable and it was the best game of his career."
L.A. Dodgers is set to take on Kansas City Royals in three-away games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kicking off on Tuesday.

Bill Gates and Lee Kun-hee, two top celebrated CEOs in the U.S. and Korea, both recently retired at almost the same time. Since founding Microsoft, Gates (53) had led the world's IT market for over three decades. Since 1987, Lee (64) had managed Samsung Group, Korea's largest chaebol, or family-owned conglomerate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for two decades.
Lee handed in his Samsung ID card to the conglomerate on July 1. Gates emptied his desk drawers and ended his chairmanship of Microsoft on July 11. They have many things in common,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though they are of different ages, and think and act differently.
First of all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they built top-notch global firms. Microsoft is the world's largest software maker with its Windows PC operating system commanding a more than 90-percent market share. Samsung is Korea's largest conglomerate, accounting for about 17 percent of the country's GDP and more than 20 percent of its exports.
It is by sheer coincidence that both shed tears recently, four days apart. In his retirement ceremony at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on June 27, Gates said a teary goodbye to his company. "There won't be a day in my life that I'm not thinking about Microsoft and the great things that it's doing and wanting to help,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
At the courtroom where he was standing trial for breach of trust and tax evasion on July 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lee was close to tears when he said, "Samsung Electronics is one of the world's best companies, with 11 products that are the best in the world. It would be hard to build such a company in a decade or two." But while Gates had decided to step down on his own terms two years earlier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lee was unable to leave his company in a dignified way as he was forced to retire.
A bigger difference is their post-retirement life. Since early July, Gates has been busier and livelier than ever, working at three different offices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the latest issue of Fortune magazine says. Two days a week he works at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which he founded with his wife Melinda. One day a week he works in his office at Microsoft. On the other two weekdays he studies biochemistry and develops ideas with the staff of a new technology development agency in his private office.
By contrast, Lee will have to remain low-key until the end of November when the Supreme Court passes a decision on the Samsung Group corruption scandal, although he was sentenced by a district court last Wednesday to three years in jail suspended for five. Naturally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he has neither a bright future nor chances for public activities for the time being.
What caused them to face such different futures? Different corporate environments and cultures may have played a role. But the prevailing view in business circles is that in contrast to Gates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who made his fortune by his own efforts, Lee inherited his fortune from his father and became the CEO of Samsung Group. Lee paid a mere W7 billion in inheritance tax, far less than what other chaebol owners paid (US$1=W1,019). He was also involved in controversy over the illegal transfer of group control to his only son, Jae-yong.
By contrast, Gates donated some US$23.5 billion to various organizations in just four years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from 1998 to 2002. He also operates the world's largest charity foundation, worth $37.6 billion. And Gates has caused no inheritance scandal.
These two top business leaders' retirement styles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which look similar but are actually quite different in nature, remind us how valuable transparent management and blissful retirement are for corporate CEOs.

The translator of the MBC current affairs program PD Diary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is charged with stirring up unfounded fears about the safety of U.S. beef,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has testified that staff ignored her opinion and deliberately described downer cows as a risk of causing variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. PD Diary aired a program on mad cow disease on April 29 which stoked a Korea-wide panic about the safety of American beef.
Chung Ji-min (26) who participated as one of the translators in the project,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Wednesday the production team ignored her when she repeatedly told them in the translating and editing process it was not reasonable to describe downer cows as potentially infected with mad cow disease. She made the allegations in a post on the PD Diary web board as well as an interview with the Chosun Ilbo on Wednesday.
Having read all the resources from the U.S. I got for translation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I could not pinpoint the cause of death of Aretha Vinson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a woman from Virginia who had died of what appeared to be a degenerative brain disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she said. But MBC reported it was highly likely that Vinson died of vCJD,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the human form of mad cow disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simply because Vinsons mother mentioned CJD,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is not caused by BSE-infected beef.
The PD Diary staff made an excuse in its Tuesday broadcast saying there was a problem with liberal translation. But it was staff in the production team who used vCJD instead of CJD,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and liberally translated downer cows as cows infected with BSE at their own will after all the translation was completed, Chung claimed. PD Diary should admit that their intention was to play up the risk of mad cow disease.
Chung also accused PD Diary of passing the buck to the translators. Her claims suggest the producers were already warned of the possible controversy in associating the video clip of downer cows with the cause of Vinsons death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the key issues in the mistranslation debate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a charge that might play an important role in the impending criminal investigation.

A member of a coalition of activists opposing the relocation of U.S. Forces Korea threatened residents at the new site in Daechu-ri,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Pyeongtaek on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accusing them of being “police agents” and throwing stones at their cars.
The young man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a member of the Pan-National Committee to Deter the Expansion of U.S. Bases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], damaged two cars owned by two local residents who still remain there and took documents from another,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], police and locals said Wednesday. The rear mirror of one car was broken and the windscreen of the other shattered.
The man was apprehended by residents and other activists. They quoted him as saying he saw the cars driving just behind a police car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the drivers “did not cooperate” with what he called his “inspection.” This convinced him they were police spies. The activists apologized,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], promised compensation and vowed to prevent further incidents.

International Monetary Fund,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Washington DC The International Monetary Fund says soaring food and fuel prices will not hurt the global economy as much as officials initially feared.
Thursday's revised World Economic Outlook raises the IMF's growth forecast for the first time since July 2007. Just this past April,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the IMF had warned there was a 25 percent chance of a global recession.
IMF officials say the global economy should grow more than four percent this year and just under four percent in 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but warn the world is still in a "tough spot."
IMF officials say there is still a threat from inflation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has become a big concern for both major industrial powers and emerging economies.
Governments around the world have been tightening fiscal policies to fight rising consumer prices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which have been led by soaring food and fuel costs.
The chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the U.S. central bank,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], warned this week that inflation was too high and said he was concerned about slow economic growth.
Consumer prices have risen four percent in Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Japan has lowered economic expectations because of inflationary pressures.
China said Thursday its economy slumped in the second quarter of 2008,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The cost of food in China has jumped 20 percent in the first half of 2008,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
India said Thursday its annual inflation rate is just under 12 percent. And officials in the Philippines - the world's largest importer of rice - say they are raising interest rates to fight inflation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Rice prices in the Philippines have nearly doubled in price in the past year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and inflation is at a 14-year high.

Global credit rating agency Standard & Poor's on Wednesday raised Korea's sovereign rating by one notch from "A-" to "A",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the first time in three years it has upgraded the country. The company maintained its outlook for the Korean economy at "stable."
S&P cited improvements in the financial sector and better currency flexibility as key factors behind the upgrade. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it said the North Korea issue remained a stumbling block. Although geopolitical risks shrank as six-party talks on North Koreas nuclear program resume,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the talks are likley to be protracted and inconclusive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], S&P said.
Korea's sovereign rating could be further adjusted depending on a change in relations with the North and improvements in the country's rigid labor market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it added.
The Ministry of Finance and Economy said S&P gave an accurate assessment of the government's efforts to manage macro-economic factors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], continue restructuring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], improve economic health and the financial and foreign exchange market for the last two years. A ministry official said the upgrade would enhance Korea's economic credibility and make it easier to secure credit abroad.
The "A" rating is still two notches below the rating Korea enjoyed before the 1997 financial crisis and on a par with Saudi Arabia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chile and Greece. Rival credit rating agency Fitch said Tuesday it would maintain Korea's sovereign rating at "A,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," while Moody's Investors Service has not changed its rating for Korea since upgrading it from "BAA2" to "A3" in March 2002.

Seoul shares continued in freefall on Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recording a drop of 3.45 percent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the biggest since June 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2004 when they fell 3.93 percent. The KOSPI index closed down a whopping 43.71 points or 3.45 percent at 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],223.13 points, the lowest since Nov. 7 last year. The market was hit by concerns about interest rate hikes at home and abroad and a triple witching day -- when index futures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], index options and individual stock options expire simultaneously.

The government appealed for restraint on Thursday after Evangelical groups pushed mass events in Jerusalem and several Korean missionaries were picked up in Afghanistan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Some large churches and Christian missionary groups are promoting a mass event for about 2,500 people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a government official said. They are planning an outdoor rally in Bethlehems Manger Square and a march from Jerusalem to Bethlehem on August 8-10. He said another event in Jerusalem sponsored by some missionary groups is scheduled for August 15-17 and some 500 Christians from Korea and the U.S. are scheduled to attend.

The explosive popularity of the Korean drama Daejanggeum (A Jewel in the Palace) about a Chosun-era palace cook offered a great opportunity to promote Korean food in China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the rights to the Daejanggeum trademark there were acquired by a Chinese entity. That is just one example of Koreas lackluster efforts in capitalizing on its food culture abroad.
The upmarket Japanese restaurant chain Nobu has put Galbi and Bulgogi on the menu and is pushing into the world market, while the big Japanese food producer Ajinomoto introduced its "Cook do Korea" brand with many traditional Korean favorites in 2001. While Koreans have been content to open individual Korean restaurants here and there, it is Japanese firms that have established an export market for Korean food.
According to a study by the National Intelligence Service, there are over 12,000 Japanese restaurants in the U.K.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 9,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 Indian and 7,000 Vietnamese,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], compared to a mere 50 Korean restaurants. Korean food is also being poorly treated at home. Of 17 top-notch hotels in Seoul, only five have Korean restaurants.
The world's largest food producer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Swiss company Nestle, operates some 500 plants in 77 countries and employs around 230,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 people. Last year's sales totaled US$60 billion -- more than even Samsung Electronics managed to pull in. By production inducement effect, the food industry accounts W37 billion at home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is more than W34 billion of semiconductors and the W33 billion of the automotive industry. The number of jobs in the industry creates also much greater at 528,000 than the 79,000 in car manufacturing and the 89,000 in semiconductors.
Other countries are jumping at the opportunities. Thailand's caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra personally pushed a "Kitchen of the World" project in 2001 as a national strategy to increase the number of Thai restaurants around the world from 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500 at the time to 8,500 in 2007. A corporation called Global Thai Restaurant was formed to push the efforts. Now Thailand earns US$6 billion in profits from exporting the food.
The current sushi craze in the U.S. may have been helped along by the cartoon "Shota No Sushi (The Champion) by Daisuke Terasawa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which tells the story of a boy who dreams of becoming the world's greatest sushi chef. It and other efforts like it opened world markets through increasing awareness.
Under government efforts here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], W180 million(US$=949) was spent on standardization of culinary methods as part of a mere W2.3 billion promoting Korean cuisine. "The art of Korean cooking passed down by way of the apprentice system must be standardized and made scientific, says Yoon Sook-ja, the head of the Institute of Traditional Korean Food. Prof. Moon Hyun-kyung of Dankook Universitys Dept. of Food and Nutrition said it is difficult to get much done because of the disparate policies and approaches among the government bodies that deal with food -- the ministries of agriculture and forestry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], health and welfare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and commerce, industry and energy.
However, some Korean companies are planting green shoots. Shou Fu Cheng, a Korean restaurant opened in Beijing in 1997 by Doosan Corporation has been successful in bringing in top clients including Chinese President Hu Jintao. CJ Food System opened Welly& Stone Pot Bibimbap Specialized Restaurant in Japan's Narita Airport in June and has plans to cast a wider net to include Hong Kongs airport too.

Former Uri Party leader Kim Geun-tae announced on Tuesday he will not run for the presidency and give up his party membership. He said his decision came to take responsibility for misgoverning and to push for an alliance of reform forces. Over the past four years, Kim was among the chief presidential hopefuls in the ruling camp. He commands the support of between 20 to 30 lawmakers within the party. Unlike former prime minister Goh Kun and ex-Seoul National University president Chung Un-chan who renounced their presidential bids earlier this year, Kim is a career politician. Thats why its so surprising that Kim not only gave up his presidential bid but even hinted he may not run for a National Assembly seat next year.
Right now, the presidential campaign arena is filled with politicians and other officials who are just dying for a chance to grab the limelight. One of the reasons Kim renounced his presidential bid was probably his low approval rating. But even as he did so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other presidential contenders with 0 percent approval ratings in the ruling political camp are lining up to run for the top office. Under these circumstances, it must have been very difficult for Kim,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was among the more prominent candidates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to voluntarily step down.
Lawmakers in the ruling camp are reportedly keen to see who Kim will support in the near future. But from the perspective of voters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kims own words left a deep impression on many: As a former party leader and minister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I will take responsibility for the feeling of betrayal felt by the public, Kim said. The public is telling the Uri Party and the government to step down, since they failed to live up to expectations that they would improve the living conditions of middle- and lower-class citizens. We must not blame the public or try to lecture them simply because we are in a tough situation.
Kim said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Whenever I had the chance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I asked the president to match his standards with those of the public and to listen to what they wanted. He added, Its important for the president to wrap up state affairs in a stable manner, while preparing for the future is the job of future leaders. He was calling on the president to maintain his political neutrality.
Kims comments are totally different than what the president and his confidants are so busy saying whenever they grab the microphone these days. Earlier this month, the president called himself a world-class president. A few days ago, when he was receiving an honorary doctorate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I cannot accept the criticism that I have failed in government,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and took aim at the top presidential contender of the Grand National Party by saying, Just do as much as I did. The reason why the presidents so-called confidantes are lining up to run for the top office is probably because they are just as ignorant of the state of things as the president.
According to a Feb. 19 survey by Gallup Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only 9.6 percent of the Korean public felt their lives had improved since the president took office. In a new years poll,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 61.4 percent of the voters who chose this president in 2002 regretted the decision. Is it so unreasonable to expect from the president the same level of civic responsibility demonstrated by Kim as he gave up his presidential bid?相关的主题文章:

The Culture and Tourism Ministry said it will expand exchanges for everything from Korean pop culture to traditional arts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Minister Kim Myung-gon has announced his ministry's to-do list for this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The ministry plans to step up this year its promotion of Korean pop culture and traditional brands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Minister Kim told reporters Thursday that one of his ministry's major goals for 2007 is to further support the spread of the Korean Wave or Hallyu and globally market traditional Korean brands under the new slogan "Han Style."
The slogan was developed last year to promote six symbols of Korea. The six are the Korean alphabet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], traditional clothing, traditional home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rice paper and music. Minister Kim says the promotional campaign will be a two-way affair.
"We will proclaim 'Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sparkling' as the country's new tourism brand to strengthen overseas marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and step up activities to promote stays at traditional Korean homes and other types of lodging,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the minister said. Our culture centers abroad will help expand bilateral cultural exchanges to develop cultural marketing."
By 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ministry says it hopes to have 100 Korean language schools all over the world. On the domestic front, a grand cultural festival in October will celebrate a number of national holidays that occur around the month. The ministry is also striving for better long-term strategies for copyrights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new media and others by launching new teams this year.
The Culture and Tourism Ministry says 2007 will be a year of reform and improvement to prepare Korea for the future. It plans to focus on updating policies for digital and cultural contents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sports and tourism.
